CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

“CARRIER LANDINGS!”

I looked in the direction of the loud voice to find three long tables lined up end to end with a Laugh In captain pouring nearly a whole pitcher of beer down its entire length. Before I could fully comprehend the idea of long tables with beer sloshing down the sides, a student pilot running balls to the wall hit the first table belly first sending a spray of foam and sticky beer to each side. Two tables down from the impact point, two students stood, one on each side, holding a heavy dowel rod across the table as an arresting cable.

The first landing sprayed to a full stop a foot short of the human cables. The student rolled off the far side of the second table just before it was hit again with fresh beer and another student pilot. This person was considerably huskier. His impact put severe stress on the first table and the drag, due to his excess weight, put a stop to his landing roll almost immediately. His boots still dangled off the approach end of the makeshift aircraft carrier as the room of pilots began to laugh at this beer-soaked fatso. To my surprise, it was my own student. What is one of my students doing here? This is an IP only flight. More officers tried their luck. Only a couple ever slid into the makeshift arresting cable. With the cost of beer and the mammoth proportions of the cleanup rapidly rising, the game soon ended.

Colonel Meneur turned toward his host. “Are you going to have any dancing girls?”

“Oh, well… uh, I’m afraid not,” Colonel Hurd said. “The base commander’s wife, she raised hell about it, so any floor shows are in limbo right now.”

“Well, we brought a present for your squadron from all of us at Laredo.” Colonel Meneur turned toward the stage. “Lieutenant Ark!”

From a side door behind the bar, much to my surprise, my very own student stuck out his head.

“Yes, sir.”

“Bring out the girls!”

A sudden hush enveloped the room. Men looked from side to side, trying to make sense of what was happening.

“Gentlemen,” Ark said to the crowd, still dripping with beer. “Coming to you direct from Laredo Air Force Base, may I present… Honey and Boopsie!”

The two women appeared from behind the bar, pranced through the crowd, over the dance floor, and up on the stage, while a jukebox began blasting out the heavy bass beat of Honey’s trademark tune. The area broke out in pandemonium as the sex-starved Laugh In pilots got a mental grasp of unauthorized dancing girls before their eyes. The Laredo crew seemed to enjoy watching their reactions as much as viewing the ladies. The women were dressed as usual in their six button blouses and blue jeans, slowly unbuttoning, but never stripping, until the second record on the program. They did it well. The excitement of the spectators built to a crescendo of noise—truly an unexpected student pilot’s dream come true.
